The Problem With Looking Fine
Just because she's getting everything done after cancer doesn't mean she's doing fine.
She's back at work.
Making decisions. Responding to emails. Getting things done.
How's she doing?
Fine.
Of course she is.
She's always been the one who knows what to do. The one who gets things done. The one who doesn't complain.
Cancer may have turned her life upside down, but she certainly hasn't let it stop her from taking care of business.
From the outside, everything appears to be going remarkably well.
But when did we decide that looking fine means being fine?
The Art of Looking Fine
There are many things accomplished women are good at.
Getting things done when everything gets crazy is just one of them.
After cancer, those same abilities can make it surprisingly easy to conceal how much harder everything has become.
Perhaps she's preparing more carefully for meetings because concentrating isn't quite as effortless.
Double-checking decisions she once made confidently.
Pushing through exhaustion because there are things to get done.
And she's getting them done.
Which is precisely why nobody notices how much harder she's working.
When Being Capable Becomes a Liability
Independent. Capable. High expectations.
Qualities she's spent years developing and valuing.
But what happens when those same qualities make it difficult to acknowledge that something needs to change?
For someone who's always been capable, asking for help may feel more threatening than simply being exhausted.
So she continues doing what she's always done.
She adapts. Compensates. Pushes harder.
And tells herself that eventually she'll feel like herself again.
Maybe she will.
But what if waiting isn't the only option?
The Question She Isn't Asking
She's getting everything done.
So perhaps the question isn't whether she can keep up.
Of course she can.
The question is: What is it costing her?
Does she have energy left for anything beyond work?
Does she still feel confident in her decisions?
Is she maintaining her professional standards at the expense of everything else?
Is she choosing how she wants to work and live—or simply trying to prove she can still do everything she did before?
It's not about being driven or wanting to accomplish things.
It's about what she's giving up to maintain the appearance that everything is fine.
Is Looking Fine Really Good Enough?
When you've spent your life being capable, it can be difficult to acknowledge that something has changed.
But being capable doesn't mean she has to keep doing everything the way she always has.
There is a difference between knowing she can handle something and deciding whether she should have to.
Perhaps the goal isn't to prove that she can still do it all.
Perhaps it's to decide what deserves her energy, what needs to change, and how she wants to function now.
Because looking fine is a remarkably low bar for a woman who has spent her life expecting so much more of herself.
